So.... it's supposed to be "dead week" right? Then why is it that I have somekind of a test or huge project due this week in nearly every one of my classes. I feel like I haven't slept at all this week because I have been having to stay up and study for this weeks tests and assignments.
I haven't had the chance to even think about studying for my upcoming finals. I was just wondering is anyone else has had this problem.

I am going to claim still being new to EKU. Educate me...what is dead week?
If I am not mistaken, dead week means that no major assignments are due and no test are given so that you have sufficient time to prepare for final exams. Does anyone else know if I am right?
Dead week is the week before finals and from what I have been told, professors are encouraged to not have big projects due this week. However, in five of my six classes, big projects have been due this week. Evidently, this custom is fading into the past.
Guess I should get more up to speed. I didn't see this on the Academic calendar I downloaded or read it on the DAILY emails I get from EKU. I will know next semester to not give students the entire semester to get their projects done and make them turn them in a week earlier.
Is this what you are telling me? I should not have had you turn in the class major project last night? I'm not being smart alec. I'm serious. A project that was explained in the FIRST quarter of the class, gone over again, after several more weeks...but we should not give you the entire semester to complete it and then ask you to turn it in on the last night of class?
We are at fault for allowing you to have the entire semester to budget your time. We should have given you LESS time to complete it and required you to turn it in earlier?
SERIOUSLY...explain to me what I am missing here. I don't understand.
Educate the instructor.

Dead week I would assume is the week before finals so that you can have extra time to study for final exams. I guess it was once reading day were classes didn't meet that day. This is the first time I have ever heard it called dead week though. When I was at Kentucky Wesleyan I remember they would keep the library open later during finals week and like everyone has said on this post it seemed like every project was due the week before. So when you really needed the library resources the library was always closed.
I completely agree with this!! However, some of my classes are allowing us to take the finals early or they are take home finals. I had one yesterday, and I have one in class tomorrow. I had a take-home due today in class. I also had big projects and presentations due this week. However, most of them we have known about for quite some time, so I don't feel like it's an invasion of dead week.
Mrs White, I don't think the project being due this week was a big issue. We all knew about it, and most of us had it complete or just about complete.
I agree, I was just answering the question in hand. I wasn't complaining, I knew what had to be done.
I agree with you. I didn't even know what dead week was. I came from Morehead State and all we had was reading day, and they eliminated that. I have had 10,000 projects it seems coming due at the same time. My brain has been on complete overload.
Yesterday I got to turn in my LAST BIG project. And when I got back to my room, I didn't know what to do with myself. It felt SO nice to not have anything to do. I guess I could have studied for my finals next week...But I filled out Christmas cards and hung my lights instead.
It was an amazing feeling. I hope you're getting everything done and that you'll have a chance to rest before finals. :) Good Luck and have a wonderful break! (Relax!)

OMG i know!!! I had lots of stuff due this week and only two finals next week...maybe finals week should be dead week :)
I have also heard that dead week refers to the fact that the students' are up all night getting all their projects done and getting ready for finals, that they just wish they were dead.
I feel ya! I dont know if it was the procrastination...or just be unaware of everything due last week..but its friday night now..and my brain just physically hurts.
Mine too Valerie. I am a huge procrastinator and it's now biting me in the butt. I feel so drained that I can't function well.
Ms. White,
The definition of Dead Week requires that professors do not schedule to cram any any new information, have big assingments due, or any tests during the week before finals. IF they do, they are supposed to consult with their students to see if this is okay with them. In your case, giving us extra time to complete a project we've known about all along, I do not think you were in the wrong. What is really frustrating is when you have major project like yours that are due at the end of dead week and then returned to be fixed and turned in during finals week. I am in that boat right now...it really sucks! New information that will be tested is also quite frustrating during dead week. Students minds are much too wrapped up in all the projects due and finals to concentrate on new information, which wouldn't be the case if teachers followed the protocol for dead week....hope this helps for future semesters!
This is DEAD week for me!!! Not as RELAX and STUDY time... But, as I am DEAD!!! I am ready for Holiday Break :) I hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday!!! Merry Christmas... and Good Luck on the Final :) Holly H.
I was leaving campus Tuesday and I noticed the "Eastern Progress" next to the door and in bold letters "DEAD WEEK" on the front page.
This is what is stated in the paper, "The Faculty handbook for the year 2007-2008 school year says, pre-final examination week policy, that no major examinations or assignments are to be given during the week preceding final examinations",
In the defense in Mrs. White, the assingment was not given during this week but at the beginning of the year.
