To Mrs. White

As I watched you on Monday, I could tell you were trying to fight back tears and remain postive for us. That is the kind of dedication that makes a wonderful teacher, one that sets the kind of example that makes me realize that this is my calling. Since I have started my college experience (more than five years ago, lol) I have had all kinds of professors, the kinds who could care less about me or my situation, the ones who became my friends, and ones (like you) who view their students as future collegues. I will admit that at first I was a little afraid of your blunt style of teaching, but I have learned so much in your class that I quickly realized that you did not view us as merely your students, and that you expected us to learn to our fullest potential. I just wanted to say that I got a lot out of your class, and that I am praying for you and your family. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas, it was a pleasure being in your class.

Erica,

Follow your calling! Answer the call! I've often tried to figure out how to communicate this message, my passion, the sense of urgency WITHOUT THE BLUNT STYLE that intimidates or frightens people. That is NEVER my intention. It is ALWAYS my intention for people to feel the sense of urgency and to realize the importance of the message. I'm glad you heard me from my HEART and not my FACE or TONE OF VOICE to realize it is all about my LOVE OF CHILDREN and desire to see them receive what EACH of them deserve.

I'll keep working on my delivery ;).

Email or call me when you are in your first teaching job. I want to come sit in the back and just SMILE!

Lol, I just hope my first year of teaching that I can deliver the same kind of message that you did for our class, Mrs. White. (Instead, I'll probably be freaking out a bit). I hope not. All I know is that I care about kids, and I want to help them learn. My friends always tease me because I'm always teaching or tutoring their children without thinking about it. I think it's just in my nature to be a teacher, and for some reason, kids listen to me. I think one of the most important things about teaching kids (in my experience) is that we have treat them with the same respect as we do adults and not like they are little children who don't understand anything unless WE teach it to them. I totally agree with what you said Mrs. White about the difference between teaching vs. instruction, I just hope that once I get in there that I will teach with same passion and dedication. As far as your delivery is concerned, I wouldn't change a thing. College students NEED someone passionate like you teaching a class, and I RESPECT the fact that you are blunt. I WISH that I could speak my mind the way that you did (with so much enthusiasm), and that you were honest when we weren't performing to the best of our abilites or angry when people weren't listening or giving others respect. All these aspects only showed how much you CARE about what you teach. Again, you and your family are in my prayers. I hope you have a wonderful holiday.
