My autistic nephew is what made me want to go into special ed.!
At this time I feel that it is important for all teachers to have a base knowledge of special ed. issues. Identification and early intervention are vital for young learners. And language or a good communication ability is key in an educational setting.
I was an aide for a wonderful student that has autism and I had to fight for this student so she could be in a regular ed classroom. I believe if I became a special education teacher I would have a "louder" voice to be heard to be an advocate for these wonderful students.
Side note: One of the students I briefly worked with over the years passed away Monday. I believe he was only nine. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
I had always wanted to be an English teacher, up until my jr. or senior year of highschool. I was diagnosed with a bone disease and spent most of those years in wheelchairs. I am also epileptic. While those things were very hard to come to terms with, they made me the person I am. They helped me to have compassion and see the beauty in everything. I honestly feel like if I had not experienced those things that I wouldn't have wanted to go into special education. Now, because of them...I feel like I can relate even just a bit. That made me want to take my care to the next level.
I substitute teach and the classes that I enjoy the most are the special ed classrooms. It amazes me that even though many of the kids are diagnosed with the same disorder you see very few similarities between them. I like the challenge of getting to know each student and learning what is the best way to help them succeed in school.
I work with special needs students and well as adults. Some people take them for granted and I believe they all deserve a chance just like we got a chance. I want to give them this chance. Thats why I am Special Ed Major.
