ABC Nightline and Autism

I was watching nightline abc last night and they had an interesting story about autism. It talked about that there is talk about autism screening being universal for children at 18 and 24 months. They also showed how a parent of a child with autism found that surfing was an interest that they him and his son shared together. He is now organized a program for parents of children with autism to bring their kids to the beach and have them enjoy a day of surfing. Does anyone agree with the universal screening?

Yes, I agree with the universal screening. The stats mention that 1 out of every 166 children have autism and that seems scary to me. I believe early intervention could benefit all children no matter how severe they are.

I think it is a good idea because it is best to learn that a child is autistic while they are young. I know my nephew was diagnosed early and that helped because he was put into all kinds of therapy right away.

I have noticed that most of the big TV shows have done specials on Autism. I was flipping through the channels a few nights ago and there were four people from some sort of autism organization on Larry King Live. By the time that I caught it I only got to watch the last five min or so. One of the people talking about autism is an actress that I recognized but I couldn't remember her name. I also saw a commercial with several celebrities talking about how many children are diagnosed with autism each year. I think it's great that this is something that people are starting to take notice to and begin to understand.

I think that universal testing is an awesome way to help any child. Overall universal testing can help parents figure out the problem and try to help solve them. While I do think that early identification is important. I do not think that every child must be fixed or healed. We were all made in a certain way for a certain reason. We are all special because of those reasons. Just because a child is different, does not mean that child needs to be fixed.
