A Vision of Students Today

As I watched this video I immediately reflected on our Monday night classes...what students are actually doing during class...what they are LEARNING...what students do throughout their day/week...how I am ENGAGING students in the learning process.

Thoughts on the implications for teaching...learning...your teaching in the future???????

Wow! What an interesting video. I have to say that I agree completely for ME. I do not usually get much out of classroom instruction, and half the time I end up drawing and not paying a bit of attention to the lecture, escpecially if the class is not interactive. When I was taking genreal education classes at another university, there were at least 80 students in each of my classes and my professor was not my 'teacher', it was me. I remember sitting in class and thinking what a waste of time it was, how I could be working to pay the piles of bills that had already accumulated since the beginning of the semester. Instead I was sitting in a classroom because of an attendance policy which would cause me to fail after 5-6 absences even if I had a good grade. Don't get me wrong, school is a high priority to me, but not my number one priority. Personally, I think that college's should offer more online, night, or one day a week classes for those of us who work full-time, and have kids and families to take care of. However, I think a lot of students benefit from face-to-face instruction and lecture, and need that class time to put things in perspective. I feel that everyone learns differently, and I don't learn that way. I learn from reading, putting it into my own words, and talking about what I have learned. I think our class does a good job of not focusing on 'lecture' and works more towards a learning goal, not just putting the information out there for us to try and make sense of it. That is why when I begin teaching, I hope to make my classroom as interactive as possible, and stray from 'lecturing' which I think can be pretty boring to anyone.

Wow, that video is awesome and eye opening. It is very true through. Lately i have felt the same way. There is not enough time to complete all that needs to be done in today's society. My boyfriend watched this with me and said "he has to work 8 hours a day at work full time, and on top of that take night time classes at college and is still some how expected to study for test and quizes, do homework and eat and sleep." How will this ever be possible?

WOW!!! I agree with the previous comments posted! TIME? What is this... I work two jobs, take classes on Mondays after working 8 hours, and am a SINGLE mom to a six year old son! I feel like some days what’s the point is! I know I am only going to get a few hours of sleep anyway! Our class (Mrs. White) does a good job of not giving us BUSY WORK!!! But, not all other classes & teacher do.
I love that most of the things we learn come from experience!!! I hope that as a teacher I can make learning FUN, Excited, I want kids to be ready to come to class. This video needs to be passed around!!!
