Groups

Share some strategies for working EFFECTIVELY in groups. List characteristics of an effective group member that contributes to maximum opportunities for participation and learning for all members of the group.

This Week's Videos

This week's videos were so cute. But I personally enjoyed the dog videos better...and I'm sure we all did since we're an animal loving class! Ha ha! I especially loved the one where the blonde girl kept saying "Oh yeah baby!" That was cute! Anyway, just thought I'd share! I hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday weekend! God bless!

Aly O'Connor

Hey Guys! My name is Alyssa O'Connor, but everyone calls me Aly. I'm a sophomore and communication disorders is my major. I'm from Union, Kentucky. Which is next to Florence, Kentucky which everyone only knows because of the water tower that says "Florence Yall" on it. I'm a very outgoing person. I'll try anything once in life. On campus I'm involved in the Delta Zeta sorority, which is my home away from home. Communication Disorders is actually my third major, I was a Special Ed for Deaf and Hard of Hearing major then I switched it to LBD and I think I'm sticking with the major that I have now. Have a great holiday weekend.

Feedback on Monday

I appreciate your feedback on Monday's class (even the comments on "the intimidating lecture on side conversations - see that comment in another dicussion). This is important to me and lets me know that the structure of the class was meaningful and helpful to you. I will continue to plan activities that have you actively engaged in constructing new meaning for YOURSELF as you did on Monday.

The upcoming class on language development THEORIES will be a bit different but we'll work through it! Stick with me and then provide this same type of feedback on HOW YOU LEARN this TYPE of INFORMATION best!!

This PROCESS OF LEARNING is what you need to be considering as you seek to become TOP KNOTCH EDUATORS. Thinking about thinking...learning about learning...communicating about communicating...reading about reading.
You with me? I know YOU ARE!

Mrs. White

who i am

Hi,
My name is Sarah Carr I am 19 years old and I am from the lovely Independence, KY most don't know where that its but its twenty minutes from Cincinnati. I am a very out going person. I love to have fun and to have a good time. My friends, family, and my boyfriend are the most important things in my life. I am an LBD major and I love learning about special education because its always changing. My two other loves are food, and the Indianapolis Colts. I am a big kid at heart, and I never want to change that. I'm excited to get to know everyone I hope that everyone else is just as excited.

why?

I figured that I would try to start a new discussion for each of us to try to respond too... I just wondered if anyone would want to tell us all why they decided to go into special education.I'll start.I think I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but I always thought that I would teach high school history, but my senior year in high school we had a thing called peer tutoring that we did for one semester. During my peer tutoring time I was in a special education classroom. At first I was a little nervous, but when Christmas break came and the semester was changing I didn't want to leave the classroom. The kids in that room had left such and impact on me and that I fell in love with them. I had my schedule changed so that I could stay there the rest of my senior year. After my graduation I decided that I still wanted to teach but just a different subject. I still go back to that school and help out with that class when I get the chance. I love kids and I think that this will be a very rewarding job. Anyone want to share theirs?

Thankful for not wasting my time.

I feel like this class is already doing it's job..and I like that alot! I've been in classes in the past where I felt like they were a total waste of my time. I like how I went into Mondays class knowing very little about morphemes, semantics, and pragmatics...but left the class assured that I had learned something. I only hope that it continues!

Monday night class

Monday nights class was very informative, and the definitions that were given were very clear. I think I may finally understand what the key terms mean. See you guys Monday!!!

Hello!

My name is Keturah Montgomery. I am from Fleming County. I just transfered for Morehead State. My post didn't show up before, so I will try this again. I am a special education major with deaf and harding of hearing. I have always wanted to be a teacher. In elementary school I decided I wanted to teach deaf children, because of my own problems with hearing. I enjoyed class on monday night. I really learned a lot from the group activities. I ususally have bad experiences with group work, because I would rather work alone. In this class group work helps you to grasp the concepts.

Class interaction

The interaction made for an interesting class last Monday. I felt extremely intimidated by the lecture on side-talking. I was under the impression the discussion during group work was welcome, as long as it related to the activity.
Sheila

Class last Monday

Class on Monday was very interesting I never knew that words we use everyday can be broken down into so many parts. I wonder if words in other languages have the same forms? Breaking into groups was a good exercise because we could share ideas and also gave us an opportunity to get to know others in the class.

Hi, my name is Brad

Hi, my name is Brad McNew. I live in Mt. Vernon, Ky. This is my first year at EKU. I already have a bachelors degree in history from Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Kentucky. I've decided to go back to school and get my teaching certificate. Being able to make a diffrence in a child's life is very rewarding and is why I want to be in the classroom. I played baseball in college and am currently coaching at Lincoln County High School. I have one dog too a chocolate lab.

reading responses

Will the reading responses be given out to us or talked about before they are due in class? Is the first reading response, that is due on September 17 in class, over chapters 1 through 5 or just over a certain topic? There is only one reading response on the course outline, so is there only one?

class

I really liked how we got to move around the last class. I like how we divided up in groups it was very creative. In night class it is very beneficial to be able to move around because after a long day everyone is tired. It was also very creative how we divided up in groups. I have never lined up in a circle by birthday months and then counted off in numbers. This gave us a chance to meet new people in the class. I think tit is easier to learn the topics when you get to discuss topics with a large group. It also makes it a very informational class discussion when all the groups tell each small group aloud what they have gathered and discussed.

Another One

Just wanted to comment on one of the videos. "Oh yeeeeeaaaah bayyybeeee!!" That is absolutely darling. I've known kids who have cute little things you can get them to say all the time. It's just precious, really. My friend's two year old son will call for their dog Coacoa...in his sweet little baby voice, "CooooaCooooa" I really wish you all could hear it!

Shew, finally!

Sorry for the delay, but I was having trouble with posting a new blog. Anywho, my name is Alisa Friedly. I hale from Frankfort, Ky. where I've lived since I was about 2 years old. I am a third year student, just transfering from Morehead State University. So really I feel like a freshman all over again. I just changed my major from Special Education MSD to DHH. However, I just learned that EKU does indeed have MSD (which I was not aware of when I transfered.) So I think I might switch back and minor in DHH. I have a passion for teaching special needs children. Why? I could never tell you, really. It's like a calling. I just feel like it's the best thing I could do with my life. I am dyslexic and although not as severely as some, I know what it's like to struggle. I want to give EVERY child the chance he or she deserves. My idols and inspiration are my grandmother (who was a teacher for 23 years), my sister (who is also going into Elementary Ed., and Ron Clark and Erin Gruwell (from the Freedom Writers Diary). I want to change the world for generations of kids wherever I teach. It will take a lot of work to get there, but nothing is more rewarding than seeing children achieve and be proud of themselves. :) Nothing could be better...true story.

All My Children

Just

Just thought I would upload some pictures of my children and our dogs.

Job Search

I am currently looking for a job that I can work while in school. I would like to find a job that gives me hands on experience working with children. I am not very familiar with Richmond, does anyone know of any places I can try?

Introduction

Hello! My name is Danielle Knight. I am from Walton, KY. This is my third year in school and I just switched my major to special education. I am a little stressed out because I did just declare and am a little behind because of that. I am very excited about this career. I love children and would love even more to be an influence in their lives. I feel there is nothing more rewarding than being an influence in someones life, even if it's just one life I will touch that's worth all the work and effort I put in!

Who am I?

"OH, NO!! What have we gotten ourselves into?"

My name is Lisa and I am a senior Elementary Education Major with a Kindergarten emphasis. I am originally from Elkhorn City, a tiny town in Eastern Kentucky. In June, I married my high school sweetheart, Cameron. We live in Lexington. I currently work at Neurosurgical Associates. I know it is totally different than the education field I am in but I love the job and the staff. Plus, the patients I work with make my job rewarding. Cam and I currently do not have any pets but we are looking to change that. We are in the hunt for a dog that is the correct fit for our family. I am in my last semester of actual class. I am taking my methods block and will do my student teaching in the Spring Semester. YAY!!

class

I thought the class information was helpful because of the way we learned it (groups). I felt like the students accomplished a lot and sort of used one another to better our understanding of the content. I just thought I'd share a picture of my puppies with you all...since we all like dogs. Harvey is the one eating the tiger and Olivia is eating the pink frog. ;)

Class on Monday

I have never been much on group work, but this time it was fun. I enjoyed the activity and it brought to light things I didn't know about like pheromones ans morphology.

!!! Can Anyone tell me how to upload photos!!!

Class Monday

The class we had Monday was amazing. I loved learning about morphemes, semantics, and pragmatics. I love that we get to do group things, because I think that it help me to understand what we are talking about when get to do hands on things. I like that we pass the cards around and liked the many different words and sentences that each group came up with. I thought the class was fun and really enjoyed it.

Class last night

Even though I am not very fond of night classes, especially since I have a long drive, I look forward to classes like last night. I feel it is very important for teachers to get their students involved and let them learn through interaction. I really got a lot of information out of the lecture last night, so thank you.

Morphology

Up until now morphology was a shared interest with my son and I and our love for the Power Rangers. I have a more comfortable understanding of Language, Communication and Speech. I never realized that a simple letter as 'S' could create such a difference in the meaning of a word. I looked at it from a quantity perspective. I now see the difference.

Class

Last nights class was a lot of fun. I had no idea what those words were last night, until we went over them. Now, they are not hard to understand. I will see you all next Monday.

questions about blog

I am also curious as to what we are suppose to post after our introduction. I know that we are suppose to blog 4 times a month. Are we suppose to blog about questions we have for each other about the class or are we suppose to state facts that we have learned from our text books and the class lecture each night? Also, since it is close to the end of August are we suppose to blog 4 times in August?

About me

Hi my name is Kristin Thompson. I am a special education/LBD/ elementary education major. I plan on graduating in Fall 2008. I am from Marion County, Kentucky and commute to campus. I am a substitute teacher and I really enjoy working with the kids that are in the special education programs at the schools. Special education is a very interesting subject to me and I have enjoyed the classes that I have taken in it.
Hello!

My name is Beth I live in Berea. I have a daughter who just turned 14 yesterday. I work fulltime at St. Joe East in lexington and go to school part time. I have never blogged before so I hope I am doing this right. See ya tonight!

The Class

Hey everyone. So after we blog our introductions...then what? Are we just supposed to talk about the readings or what is going on in class? I'd just like to add that I think this class will be inspiring to us as people who will be working with individuals who have special needs. It seems that there are several people, including the instructor, who are quite passionate about this field and what they can do FOR THE CHILDREN. I have worked as a paraeducator in an FMD class and I have substituted for several different types of classes, so I have seen a lot of issues occur which I don't think should. I have found that the greatest problem to deal with often involves things we can not control or even help at times like home issues, parents, community, etc. It can be really discouraging to feel that sense of failure when you can't help the child with all the things they need help with. I really think that is part of the reason everyone else (meaning people outside of the field) think special education is such a "challenging" field. It's good to see people fighting for the children though, especially future educators who CAN make a difference in those children's lives.

Melanie Alsip

Greetings from Corbin, Kentucky. My name is Melanie Alsip and I am finally a senior after four long years. I am married and a mother of 2 boys, which are the light of my life and what drives me to continue with my education.
I had volunteered in the school system quiet often until the past year when my youngest was born. During that time, I spent most of my days in the Resource Room where my oldest son spends the majority of his day. He has a rare disorder and requires a lot of one on one assistance. The experience of working with the other children made me realized how much I enjoyed this field and because of this experience I changed my major to Special Education Learning and behavior disorder P-12 and P-5 Elem Ed.
I am excited to learn all I can in this field, because will it not only make me a better teacher, but it will make me a better parent at home.
Well hello, my name is Erin Ray. I am obvioulsy a special education major. I have a minor in sign language and I just transfered here from Owensboro Community College with an Associates degree. I love music and art and my family means the world to me. I'm not the typical 22 year old girl and I'm very proud of that. I'm glad to stand out in a crowd. But none of those things are whats important. The important thing is who I am now and what led me to be here. I would like to share a bit of that story with you so that maybe you can begin to understand why teaching will never be just a job to me.

At 16, as a junior in high school I was diagnosed with a bone disease in my legs. I spent those next two years of high school and part of my start of college in and out of wheelchairs, hospitals and on crutches. Before my diagnoses I wanted to teach high school english. But during those 3 years and those 5 surgeries, my heart changed. I wanted to do something more. I felt so powerless everyday and I hated that. One morning I woke up and I physically could not move myself. And I realized that if I hated this for one day or a week or month, how would someone feel who lived there life with this disability or another. And thats when I knew. Who better to teach a child who has a disability than someone who has experienced a small side of it themself.

So I began my college career with a goal. And I had people who tried to stop me. People who said that I could do better and more important things. But they were wrong then and they still are.

A year ago, I was diagnosed with epilepsy as well. It was a shell shock for a 20 year old girl. But after I accepted it and my new terms of life I realized something. It was just one more thing that could make me stronger. One more thing that could help me to understand my class better.

So here is the thing about communication. It's not always about words or how you say them. Sometimes, it is about how the word, fate, life itself interacts with you and how you react back. Do you go with it or against it?

And this is what I did. I let life lead me to where I am supposed to be. And I have never been happier.

Hi my name is Erin

Hello everyone. My name is Erin Wolf. I live in Somerset with my husband and two year old son. I am a junior majoring in middle grades LBD with an emphasis in math. There are lots of things I enjoying doing like swimming, fishing, and going to the park with my son, but most of of all I like to just relax at home with my family.

Hello!!

My name is Melissa Foster. I live in Irvine, KY. I was born in North Carolina, and grew up around the world in Germany. I posted earlier, but I can't find it. This blog thing is new to me. I have five children total (his 3, mine 2). We have 2 boys, 3 girls and 2 grandchildren. My major is LBD and P-5. I decided to come into this field after working in the school system as a para educator in an LBD self-contained classroom and saw how some children were treated. I love children and will do all I can to see them succeed. My goal as a teacher is to help others realize that all children can learn, you can't give up. Anyway, I also have 4 dogs, 4 farm cats, two Sugar Gliders, a chameleon, and saltwater fish ( I love the ocean). I do not Know how to up-load a picture so maybe someone can help me with that later!

Hello everyone. My name is Rebecca Rothermund. I am a junior just transferring in to EKU with a major in special ed./lbd in ele. ed.. I am from and live in Lexington. I have two brothers and two sisters who I love dearly- and not to forget my mom and dad. My older brother is a police officer with Lexington and coaches football at our old high school. My two sisters are younger than me, in which, one is also a junior at Campbellsville Univ. and my other sister is a senior in high school. My little brother is beginning his sixth grade year upon our family's request for him to never grow up! He is also beginning his school career in football. We love football! And I have just returned from my friend's ranch out west where she plans to have an organization for foster kids to come and work with the horses. This is what I intend to do as well and much more. I also have a paint that I love to ride bareback up into the hills on the ranch. Wish I where there now!

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Hello!

Hello! My name is Valerie Keating and I am a fourth year transfer student here at EKU. I am from Ironton, Ohio and have been living in Lexington for the past four years. I am a elem. ed and special ed major. A few interesting things about me would be: I have a twin sister, I hate chocolate but love anything peanutbutter, and I love my dog, Dukey like he was my own child. My goal that I strive for daily is to live a life that is glorifying to God...and this is just one reason why I have chosen special ed as my major. A lot of time society looks down on children with disabilities but I want to help change that. I want them to know that I look at them the way God looks at them....being perfect the way they are.
Hey, my name is Erica Jackson. I'm a sophomore this year and my major is middle school english and special education. I'm from Cincinnati and I have two dogs and a younger sister. I love children and I really enjoyed monday's class and am looking forward to next monday.

Hey...I am Amanda Hymer and I am from Irvine, Kentucky but I live here in Richmond. I am a SED major emphasizing in Deaf and Hard of Hearing. I am a sophomore this year. I am usually a very quiet person, but that all changes once I get to know you. I pretty much lead a boring life that consists of school and work. I work at a daycare and I absolutely love it. I love kids and spending time with them. I have a three year old brother who is a handful but I wouldn't trade him for the world. Other than that, I am pretty boring.

Maggie Sporing

Hi everyone! My name is Maggie Sporing and i am a junior this year at EKU. I am originally from Cincinnati but i love living in Richmond. I am majoring in early childhood special education (LBD) and i have no doubts about my decision as i absolutly love children! I live off campus with my roomate and our two dogs. Hello my name is Alice Salyers, I am form london, ky. I have one brother and one twin sister, who also attends eku. I love working with kids. I am majoring in Deaf and Hard of Hearing with Elementary ED. I enjoyed the class last night and can't wait for the class Monday. I enjoy getting to know new people and making new friends.

Hello!

My name is Erica Jones and I am originally from Lexington, Ky, but now I live in Berea. I have two boys (one child, 8, and one husband), and I just began going to EKU last spring semester. I am 'technically' a senior, but it seems like the closer I get to graduating the more classes I am discovering I missed in the transfer shuffle, so I'm probably more like a sophmore or something with enough hours to have two degrees. Oh well... Also, I am a LBD major minoring in English. Let's see... I have a chocolate lab named Lulu who is a year old (and the best dog ever!) My son just went into the third grade and he isn't too wild about his teacher because she is: (in his words)"...very, very, very, very old...like 45 or something." (lol). That's about it for now.

About me

My name is Sheila Neal and I am from Rockcastle County, near Somerset. I am a non-traditional student. I have three grown children and a grandson who is ten and has been recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I have two dogs, a Blue Heeler named Sis and a Border Collie called Ralph. They have 40 horses that they take care of and do a great job. They stop any disagreements between the horses! We raise Tennessee Walking Horses and I have two new babies (one-week-old and two-weeks-old).

Enjoyed the class tonight

I enjoyed the fast-paced style the instructor used tonight in class. Some of the topics she discussed were new to me. I didn't realize what an important role language, speech and communication play in assessing a student. I think I will leave this class with a much better understanding of what is required to be a 'good' teacher.
Sheila Neal

Kicking Off The Semester

I enjoyed reading students' posts on the blog last semester. Students used it productively to answer one another's questions, share ideas, current events relative to our class topics and even great stories. I look forward to seeing how this group will use it to your benefit and enjoyment.

To get our COMMUNICATION started feel free in your first post to share a brief introduction of yourself if you would like. It would be great to know where everyone is from, what your major is and anything unique, special or fun you would like to share with us. You're welcome to upload a picture of yourself, a pet, a cartoon, etc.

I am a Hoosier transplanted in Kentucky now for 20 years. I LOVE German Shepherds. This one is the King of our house. His name is Hanif.
