Language and communication is at the heart of society. Learning how to use language to communicate wants and have needs met can be a complex task for many children. Our course will explore how language develops and the intricate challenges many children face who experience a variety of physical, emotional and cognitive difficulties.

Yes, pick only ONE analysis - syntax, semantics, OR pragmatics. Don't do all three of them!!! :)
Mrs. White did not specify whether or not we could use our own child, but I assume we can since we are to study a child we know. I think it would work out better if the child knew you - I think children who are more comfortable are more apt to talk.
The only thing she did specify was to have the child no more than the age of 8, and she would hope you wouldn't do it over the age of 6. If you had a child with some sort of disability (learning, physical, etc) that would be perfect!!! :)
The child may have a CHRONOLOGICAL AGE (they may be 13 years old) but have delayed language and be a totally appropriate person with whom to work with for this language sample.
Think with me - - what is the PURPOSE for this assignment. It's not busy work. That's not me. It is to give you an opportunity to have an experience with a child who is DEVELOPING LANGUAGE - not one who has passed out of Brown's stage V and is refining language.
Make sense. Feel free to pursue other thoughts and questions about the children with whom you will work.
