Why teach Special ed.?

I spent most of my life wanting to be a vet. Then my senior year of high school I had the privilege of being a peer tutor. I worked in the class with students with severe disabilities. It changed my life. I realized that was my calling and I am making it happen. I also have two older sisters with a physical disability and some mental disabilities. They are my inspiration. They did not get very good educations though they were capable. I want to make a difference in children's lives and show them that they can beat the odds and become something great.

I have to say that I realized I wanted to work with special education students also after I had a chance to work in a classroom with them in middle school. I fell into this helping position because I liked the teacher and after spending time with these students I knew that this was what I had to do. I think that working with these students before choosing your major is a big deciding factor. I too want to make a difference in these childrens lives for the better.

Erica- thats really neat that you wanted to be a vet, I work at a veterinary hospital currently and speical education is such a change! Everyday I have doubts if I am going into the right field because I have many friends in education and they always tell me the negitive. I always keep telling myself, they are never telling me the positive of teaching. I hope that I end up with a special education major. I really feel that helping strugging students is my calling but I also keep that negitivity in the back of my head about education. I know that its all red tape and paperwork but will it truly be worth it?

Like you all I had the opportunity to work with adults and children with mild to severe disabilities some in wheel chairs some not. They range from 6 years old to in their 50's and 60's. I will never be able to forget how happy they are to see me everytime I come in the room not just when they haven't seen me in a while. I had my doubts about being in Special Education but now I have realized that it what I am supossed to do and I am happy that I know now!

I know exactly where you are coming from, when you personally experience a family member with special needs you have more of an understanding of what it is like to have a disability. Like you, I have someone in my family with special needs who has lead me to choose the special ed field. For me, it has given me a dual purpose of learning. Not only will it make me a better teacher but I can also learn new methods to teach my son to learn. So, I feel this is why I want to teach special education.
